The instruction

New Instructional Strategy
The teacher taught the root words using TIP charts (TIP stands for Term, Information, Picture). The teacher recorded the information in a large TIP chart to post in the room and students copied it into their notebooks. She also discussed the words as they came up in texts and class readings. These are her normal method for instructing vocabulary words. For the purpose of this study, the teacher added a new strategy and introduced each word with a small action or hand gesture My partner and I had discussed possible actions that could logically accompany each word, however, when she introduced the words to the class, she allowed the students to provide suggestions for actions. She wanted to ensure the actions made sense to the students, would stick in their minds, and connected appropriately to the words.
Student Practice
Daily, for about a week, the students practiced the vocabulary words independently, or with a partner. They were allowed to use any method/strategy to help them practice and study the words. Some students solely used their TIP charts and orally quizzed a partner. Others had one partner read the definition and the other partner did the action and said the root word.
